FOOD DRIVE
INFORMATION
OVERVIEW: The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma thanks your school,
students, and staff for participating in the 2009 Students
against Hunger food drive. The food drive is sponsored by the
Young Lawyers Association, United Way, Chesapeake Energy
Corporation, and Devon Energy Corporation. The food you
collect for the Students against Hunger food drive stays in your
county and arrives just in time for Thanksgiving. Schools that
collect the most pounds per student will receive an award
and school that collects the most pounds of food per student
overall will receive the Students against Hunger traveling trophy.
COmmunITy Our goal this year is to raise 250,000 pounds of food
ImpACT: between September 28 and October 30. Last year, over
200,000 pounds of food was raised, which provided nearly
160,000 meals to hungry Oklahomans. We need your help
more than ever! 500,000 Oklahomans are at risk of going to
bed hungry tonight, and the demand for food is rising. In July,
the Regional Food Bank distributed the most food it has ever
distributed in one month – 3.1. million pounds of food!

Have classes collect change in a jar to be donated to the Regional Food Bank. Students throw
dollar bills into the container of another classroom in order to “cancel out” that class’ change.
In other words, change in the container equals “positive” points, while bills equal “negative”
points.

Tie your drive to football and allocate admission to be non-perishable food donations or fund

For one day or several, have the school library allow students to “pay fines” with canned fruit
or other food items.

AFTER THE
FOOD DRIVE
SAH AWARDS: First place plaques and runner up certificates will be given
to elementary, intermediate, high school, and college groups.
Awards are based on the total weight of collected donations
(including Pound$ for Dollar$) divided by the number of
students in the school.
The school that raises the most pounds of food per
student overall will receive the Students against Hunger traveling
trophy.
Every dollar that your school raises will be converted into a
pOunD$ fOR little over 14 pounds of food (14.13 pounds). Parents, friends,
and family can support your food drive by making a fund

FOOD AND FUND
DRIVE RULES
1.
All food must be received and weighed by the Regional Food Bank, or a

partner agency, before the end of the day on November 9th.
2.
Food will be weighed and documented. The school will receive a receipt

of total poundage.
3.
Please do not contribute glass containers, bottled water, homemade items,

or perishable items.
4.
If your food is not picked up on time, please contact Angie Gaines at

againes@regionalfoodbank.org, or 405-604-7109.
5.
Notify and energize your school community via your school website,

newsletters, notes to parents, Twitter and Facebook, etc.
6.
Establish your school’s fund and food drive collection goals. One can of

food = 1 pound and a $1 donation = 14.13 pounds of food.
7.
Set up collection bins for fund and food donations. Monetary fund

donations should be kept in a designated and secure location at the

school.
8.
Schools need to have food in a central area and instructions need to be

left at the front office for volunteers who are picking up food.
9.
Please remember to tape the bottom of your food drive boxes before you

fill them with donations.
