Understanding and leading learning
By Geoff N Masters
Professor Masters, CEO of the Australian Council for Educational Research, argues that the leadership of school learning
communities – leading and supporting both student learning and professional learning – can be illuminated and enhanced by
research into learning itself. He discusses decision making in education, comments on specific findings from research into both
learning and the brain, explores the implications for teaching and identifies challenges for leaders, for example in terms of
building learning communities for the future.

Students in the lead: Increasing participation by young people
in a distributed leadership framework
By Lucas Walsh and Rosalyn Black
The authors, from the Foundation for Young Australians, argue for participation by young people in their schools via a distributed
leadership framework and particularly through the use of ICTs. They comment on ‘student voice’, current trends, examples of
innovation, and identifiable challenges. They conclude that there is great potential for young people to play an important role in
shaping educational environments in the 21st century, but that this will require a change of culture in schools and schooling.

‘Only Connect!’: A new paradigm for learning innovation in the 21st century
By Valerie Hannon
Valerie Hannon, Managing Partner, The Innovation Unit UK, argues that our ‘school reform’ and ‘improvement’ efforts are inadequate
for the challenges that we face in preparing young people to live well and sustainably in the new century. She discusses the skills,
knowledge, competencies and values that would enable this, asks what that implies for the organisation of learning, and comments
on the imperative for education systems to transform themselves, engaging the passions of both educators and young people.
